Dove Cottage is a lovely terraced cottage situated in the village of Tideswell in the Peak District National Park. The cottage can sleep two people, either together in the double bedroom or separately in the double bedroom and the second single bedroom. This cottage is full of character and includes a log burning stove for those cosy nights in! Pets are welcome – please note that this cottage does not have any outdoor space – but there are numerous short and long walks available from the door.
Tideswell is a large village which makes an excellent base being home to traditional pubs, coffee shops, delicatessens and a local supermarket. For outdoor enthusiasts there are excellent walks direct from the door through Tideswell Dale, leading out onto the Monsal Trail, which has old railway tunnels, and being traffic free is also perfect for easy cycling and horse riding. In the heart of Derbyshire and the Peak District National Park lies Tideswell, an ancient market village that’s flourished over hundreds of years.
Tideswell is extremely well placed for a cottage holiday in the Peak District, close to all the sights and attractions of the National Park and with plenty of things to do for visitors of all ages.
The village’s most prominent landmark is the beautiful 14th Century “Cathedral of the Peak”, one of Derbyshire’s most iconic churches. The Church of St John the Baptist is home to medieval brasses, wood carvings and monuments and in the churchyard you will find a sundial that is believed to have marked the spot of the original Market cross, dating back to 1251.There are also some glorious historical buildings in the town and the 15th Century Wheston medieval cross that lies on the western edge of the village has been beautifully restored, and is believed to have once marked the boundary of the Royal Forest.
Once known for its lead mining, Tideswell has a rich cultural heritage and Tideswell Theatre, formed over 200 years ago, still performs to this day. If you are vising during the summer solstice, you can join in the traditional Wakes Festival, when a week of celebrations is topped off with a performance of a local dance and accompanying song.
Tideswell’s location in the Peak District National Park makes it a popular destination for those who enjoy country walks and exploring by foot or bicycle, and there are plenty of other outdoor activities on offer for all visitors. At the south end of Tideswell Dale, you will find a nature reserve with a delightful sculpture trail and a playground for kids and there are excellent sports facilities in the village.
Tideswell has many fine country inns, a chemist, butchers, bakers and much more including a convenient supermarket open daily until 10pm. The pretty little market town of Bakewell is also just a short drive away and well worth a visit.
